Superhuman Digest Manual

Illustration Series

An Illustration series aimed at telling the story of the superpowered individuals through medical diagrams.

My basic approach was to take a direct opposite course of action to that one might typically observe in hero-related content. Typically you’d find dynamic, full-body character poses, large poppy lettering, kitsch costumes, saturated color, so in my case I simply inverted each of those qualities.

A diagram of the harmonic series is used to communicate heightened senses.

In creating this series, I came to grasp that the level of detail a project requires is less than one might expect. Accurately representing muscles, tendons, veins etc is less important than telling the story.

In this case, I found showing the objects more effective at communicating 'heightened accuracy' than showing aspects of the individual
Actual microscopic photos of microbes were used in the composition to tap into the way a regenerative limb might look.

Through this project, I learned both that color deeply affects our conception of unity across images, and that illustrations are more compelling, more consistent, and more powerful when the pipeline that created the image is simplified.
